Training harder
won't drop your
HYROX time.
Training right will.

If you're grinding 5–6 sessions a week and your race time keeps landing within a minute of your last one, the problem isn't your effort. It's the plan. Here's how the Fort Worth gym that's put athletes at every HYROX World Championship since 2022 fixes it.

The Plateau Test

If this sounds like you,
keep reading.

You're not undertrained and you're not soft. You've been preparing for HYROX the way most programs are built — hard, random, and general. The race punishes general.

You train 5 to 6 days a week. You never miss. So why did your last race land within 90 seconds of the one before it?
Your gym numbers keep climbing — heavier sleds in training, faster erg splits. But the race clock doesn't care, and it keeps proving it.
You feel great through the first four stations, then the wall balls and the back half of the runs bury you. Every. Single. Race.
Your easy days aren't easy and your hard days aren't hard — everything lives in the gray middle zone, so nothing actually adapts.
You stacked a running plan on top of your regular training and called it hybrid. Now you're tired all the time and improving at nothing.
You want to qualify for Worlds — or just beat your buddy's time — but there's no clear plan, so you're winging it and hoping fitness shows up on race day.
Here's the uncomfortable truth.

None of this is a fitness problem. It's a specificity problem. Over half of HYROX is running, and the athletes who hold pace late are the ones who built a bigger aerobic base — not the ones who ran harder. Most programs never build that base, because base work doesn't look impressive on Instagram.

The Math

Why "train hard"
stopped working for you.

Break down where your race time actually comes from, and the fix stops being a mystery.

Where Most Training Goes

The mismatch
Easy aerobic volumeAlmost none
Everything at medium-hardThe gray zone
Station-into-run workRare, unpaced
A planned build to race dayDoesn't exist
More than half your finish time is running — and the back half of those kilometers happen on legs that just pushed a sled or carried a farmer's hold. The athletes who hold pace there aren't tougher than you. They built a bigger engine on easy volume, kept their easy days easy so their hard days could be genuinely hard, and trained the station-into-run transition on purpose. That's not a secret. It's just a protocol most people never follow, because easy miles don't feel like work.

The Coach
Coach Talon Smith mid-race on the HYROX floor

Talon Smith built FTX
for the athlete you are.

Talon has raced HYROX more than 50 times and qualified for the World Championships five times. He's watched the same story on repeat: strong, consistent athletes stuck at the same finish time because nobody ever gave them a real build — just workouts.

So he built FTX Hybrid Athletics — an Official HYROX Training Partner and the 2nd HYROX-affiliated gym in Texas — around a protocol, not a class schedule: build the aerobic engine on easy volume, keep easy easy so hard can be genuinely hard, train compromised running as the core race skill, and map the whole season into a deliberate build. The result: 20 Worlds qualifiers, 52+ podiums, 91 athletes representing the gym at HYROX Dallas, and FTX on the floor at every World Championship since 2022. Talon has coached seminars in 4 states — with more on the list.

The FTX Protocol

Three things we do
that most don't.

Anyone can throw wall balls and a ski erg into a circuit. The reason FTX keeps producing qualifiers and podiums comes down to three principles most programs never commit to.

01

Build The Engine

Over half the race is running, so most of your training builds the aerobic base that holds pace late. Easy volume isn't junk — it's the engine. Ergs spare your legs the pounding while building it.

02

Easy Easy. Hard Genuinely Hard.

The most common mistake in this sport is living in the gray middle zone — too hard to build the base, too easy to sharpen. We keep every session in its lane. That's the whole game.

03

Compromised Running

The race never lets you run fresh. Station-into-run work — trained weekly, at prescribed paces — is the core race skill, and it's the one almost nobody programs on purpose.

The Rest Is The Craft

How this gets dosed — to your goal, your schedule, your race date — is the coaching. That's what you get when you join, not what we publish on a web page.

Real Questions

Stuff you're
wondering.

"I've never done a HYROX. Is this only for competitors?"
No. That wall has everything from huge PRs to a 56-minute doubles team on it, and first-timers join this team every month. Same principles, same coaching — only the dose changes. Most first-timers sign up for a race within their first two months because the team makes it feel normal.
"I already run and lift. Why isn't that enough?"
Because volume without structure is just fatigue. If your easy days aren't easy and your hard days aren't hard, nothing adapts — you're tired, not faster. The protocol keeps them in their lanes, and that's where the PRs come from.
"How fast will my time actually drop?"
Depends where your time is leaking — that's the first thing we look at. Athletes coming from random training usually have the most room in aerobic base and compromised running, and those respond within one build. We won't promise a number before we've seen you move. Anyone who does is guessing.
"What does a week actually look like?"
Running work, strength, erg volume, HYROX-specific sessions, and real recovery — each with a job, dosed to your goal. Class gives you the daily structure; the plan behind it is ours to manage.
"Do I have to pick a competitive goal?"
No. Worlds, PR, or Race Good / Look Good — no goal here is bigger than another. The mission is the same: get better, enjoy the course, live healthy alongside this team.
"Is the trial class actually free?"
Yes. One free class, no card required. And if you join, membership is month-to-month — no long-term contract, no retention script. If it's not for you, we shake hands and you keep the pacing knowledge.
